As the world shelters in place (whether we agree with it or not), children and adults are growing restless. As both a mom of littles and someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, I have been tirelessly searching for ways to keep my children entertained and myself sane.
In the few hours that I don't have two tiny humans clinging to me, asking for more snacks, or needing a butt to be wiped, you can find me exhaustively scrolling Pinterest for fun ideas and inspiration - and home decor, fitness routines, cute tees, type 4 quotes (or anything enneagram related), healthy recipes, essential oil combos, good books to read, pretty scripture quotes, and anything else I won't remember I pinned. No, truthfully, we do/make about 30% of what I pin.
So I was really excited when I found a homemade play dough recipe that I was able to (ever so slightly) tweak and make SAFE for both Andy (3) AND Emma (1). In the sea of homemade play dough made with baby oil or other potential toxic ingredients, this particular recipe was made with real ingredients I already cook with - ensuring that even my little tubby could participate in this activity (since she puts literally everything in her mouth).
Having worked with some amazing special education therapists, I am well aware of the benefits of sensory play (why this activity caught my eye to begin with), but I also wanted to use this to experiment with some new science and chemistry I recently started studying.
Being stuck inside during multiple rainy days during a pandemic is enough to drive even the most calm kids a little stir crazy. Unless you live under a rock you have probably heard that Lavender promotes tranquility. But did you know that there are TONS of other natural oils that can aid in your well being when ingested or inhaled? Me neither, until recently.
I have had friends educate me on the benefits of essential oils for years but never actually took the time to try them out. So, this particular rainy day I decided to bust out my collection that I had accumulated over the last year and did some research into the benefits of the oils we had on hand. After a little detective work and having Andy pick his favorite scents - we choose our oils and added them into our recipe!
This is not an exaggeration: my kids - BOTH - sat still for more than an hour as we played, formed, tasted (emma), and created with our new favorite activity. We added colors to match our scents and enjoyed the theraputic benefits of all the sensory stimulation we were getting! And the fun has continued for the last couple weeks! We keep our play dough stored in an air tight container - preserving both the texture and sweet smells!! Scroll down below to learn about which scents we choose and why and how you can order your own if you don't have any!
If you are looking for a way to calm the kids, have some fun, stimulate the senses, or relieve stress of your own (I don't know who got more out of this - me or the kids), then this is for you! Try it out and make sure to comment and let me know how it goes!!
1 c. Flour
1/4 c. Salt
1 Tbsp. Cream of Tarter
1 Tbsp. Coconut oil
1 c. Boiling Water *5 Drops Food Coloring of Choice
*5-10 Drops Essential Oil of Choice
Pour dry ingredients in bowl and mix together.
Boil water & melt coconut oil
Add coconut oil to water with food coloring & oils of choice* (I did 5-7 drops color and about 10 drops oil but you can add according to your preference!)
Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix well until dough consistency forms
Add up to 1/2 c. More flour if needed. Dough will be soft and pliable but should NOT be sticky. Keep adding flour if it’s sticky.
*You do NOT need to add essential oil OR food coloring if you don't want to and your playdough will just be white and unscented!)
Let sit and cool for 5 minutes then knead until dough is play dough texture! Enjoy 😊
